The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially unveiled the highly anticipated theme for the Spring 2027 Met Gala and Costume Institute exhibition. On July 31, 2026, the museum announced that the upcoming exhibition will be a solo retrospective dedicated to the visionary and controversial fashion designer John Galliano. A Historic Exhibit for a Living Legend
Curated by Andrew Bolton, the exhibition marks only the third time in history that the Costume Institute has dedicated a solo exhibition to a living designer, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017. The retrospective will be structured into three thematic sections—"Bearings," "Horizons," and "Atlas of Transformation"—and will showcase a vast collection of garments, sketches, accessories, and research materials from Galliano's graduation collection at Central Saint Martins in 1984 through his tenures at Givenchy, Christian Dior, and his recent creations for Maison Margiela.

Unlike traditional retrospectives, the Met has explicitly stated that the exhibition will not shy away from the events of 2011, when Galliano was dismissed from Dior and convicted in a French court following anti-Semitic and racist remarks at a Paris bar. The exhibition plans to examine the complexities of his creative genius alongside his downfall, subsequent public reckoning, and his eventual creative rehabilitation.
